Flodesk and ConvertKit are two of the most popular email marketing services for online business owners and creatives. In a world of clunky email providers like MailChimp (I shudder to even think of it), Flodesk and ConvertKit offer solutions that are user-friendly and results-oriented.
These two email marketing platforms are very different and it can be hard to figure out which one is right for your particular business. In this comprehensive guide, I’ll compare the key features of Flodesk vs. ConvertKit to help you decide which is the best fit for you.
Ready? Let’s get started!
The Dashboard
The Flodesk dashboard displays the most recent emails you’ve created. One of the things I love most about the Flodesk dashboard is that you can sort all of your emails into folders. It’s like The Home Edit for email.
When you first log in to your account, the ConvertKit dashboard presents you with an overview of subscriber growth and other performance metrics. This lines up with ConvertKit’s overall focus on performance and results.
Here are the two dashboards compared side-by-side:
The Email Builder
This is the area where Flodesk and ConvertKit differ the most. The Flodesk email builder allows you to create stunning emails from scratch or from one of their many pre-designed templates. You can customize brand colors, fonts, and even add custom layouts that go above and beyond any other email builder.
The ConvertKit email editor is 100% focused on substance over style. There are no frills and very few styling options. In fact, if you really want to style your email beyond the bare minimum, you’ll need to use CSS code.
Analytics
Flodesk has decent analytics but they’re not quite as robust as ConvertKit’s. You can see open and click-through rates for individual emails and workflows but you can’t see exactly which emails each subscriber has opened. You can only see a subscriber’s lifetime open and clickthrough rate.
ConvertKit offers extremely robust analytics. You can view open and click-through rates for individual emails, email sequences, and you can do a deep dive into individual subscribers. You can actually see exactly which emails individual subscribers have opened. ConvertKit also comes with added bonus of A/B testing for email broadcasts, which allows you to compare the open rates of the same email with different subject lines.
Subscriber Tagging
Flodesk only allows you to organize subscribers by segment but automatically applies certain tags to subscribers, such as active, unsubscribed, bounced, and active within a certain timeframe. While Flodesk’s subscriber sorting system isn’t as robust as ConvertKit’s, it definitely simplifies things and cuts down on confusion.
ConvertKit allows you to sort subscribers using segments and tags. Though it’s nice to have the flexibility both of these options provide, it can be confusing to figure out which sorting method you should use since they both function in similar ways.
Segments in Flodesk
Forms and Landing Pages
September 2021 Flodesk form update:
When I first wrote this post, Flodesk only had 6 form styles and…they weren’t that great. Recently, that’s changed. Flodesk now has 6 popup forms, 8 inline forms, and 10 landing page options. And here’s the kicker. Some of those forms allow subscribers to segment themselves right when they sign up for your list. That is a powerful marketing feature right there.
ConvertKit has an amazing selection of forms and landing pages to choose from. There are 20 form styles and 41 landing page designs, which are strategically designed to turn visitors into subscribers.
Email Sequences and Automation
Flodesk has a workflow builder, which you can use to build simple sequences and more complex automations. It’s actually pretty robust but if you want to create a sequence, you’ll have to add individual emails to the workflow, which is kind of pain. On the plus side, you can start with one of the 4 workflow templates, and the builder itself is beautifully designed.
ConvertKit has a sequence builder and an automation builder. The sequence builder allows you to quickly create a sequence in one place. You can then add a sequence to an automation. This is such a time-saver because it means you don’t have to add individual emails to automations and you can easily set up complex, multi-sequence automations. ConvertKit’s visual automation builder is great and it even comes with six pre-built automations that you can use to design your sales funnel.
Deliverability
Deliverability is king. Your thoughtfully written emails won’t do any good if they’re landing in the spam folder. I’ve run deliverability tests with both Flodesk and ConvertKit and here’s what I found:
In my test, Flodesk had a deliverability rate of 72% with 11% landing in the promotions tab, 14% landing in the spam folder, and 3% vanishing into thin air.
In my most recent test, ConvertKit had an 85% deliverability rate with 3% landing in the promotions tab, 5% landing in the spam folder, and 7% getting lost in the digital wasteland.
Content has a big impact on deliverability. It should be noted that my ConvertKit test email had no images or styling applied. The Flodesk email had lots of custom fonts, colors, images, etc. And the truth is that individual users experience varying results with both of these platforms. Some users who switched to Flodesk from Convertkit experienced an increase in open rates. Others experienced a decrease.
Personally, my open rates have been excellent with both but more people engage with my emails on Flodesk (i.e. by clicking on a link), probably because they look so much better.
GDPR Compliance
Flodesk claims to be GDPR-compliant but that is simply false. Flodesk has double opt-in but the forms do not have the required GDPR consent checkbox, so visitors cannot access your freebie without confirming their subscription.
ConvertKit is 100% GDPR compliant. It comes with double opt-in and a consent checkbox on all its forms. One of my favorite features is that you can choose to only show the consent checkbox to visitors in the EU.
Integrations
Flodesk is seriously lacking in the integration department. In fact, the only native integration is with Shopify. Everything else you’ll have to connect through Zapier.
ConvertKit has 18 native integrations, including a Squarespace Commerce integration, which is great because Squarespace Commerce doesn’t have a Zapier integration. Incidentally, you can also connect any service not covered by ConvertKit’s native integrations via Zapier.
Customer Service
Flodesk offers email support, a Facebook group for users, and a help center. I don’t have much experience with Flodesk support but the Facebook group is genuinely helpful and there are actual Flodesk employees who are active in it.
ConvertKit also offers email support, a Facebook group, and help center. My experience with ConvertKit support is limited but has been largely positive although I have seen a lot of longtime users complain that customer service has gotten worse over the last few years.
Pricing
Flodesk’s only subscription plan costs $38/mo with unlimited subscribers. That’s great for users with a large list!
ConvertKit plans range from free to $119/mo. You can sign up for the free plan if you have less than 1k subscribers but you won’t have access to sequences and automations. A full-service plan costs $29/mo up to 1k subscribers, $49/mo up to 3k subscribers, $79/mo up to 5k subscribers, and $119/mo up to 10k subscribers.
Affiliate Program
If you love your email marketing platform and want to earn a little extra income by recommending it to clients, blog visitors, etc., both Flodesk and ConvertKit have affiliate programs.
Flodesk awards a flat one-time $19 commission for every customer you refer who signs up for the paid plan. I am not a fan of one-time commissions on subscription products but at least they offer something.
ConvertKit has an outstanding affiliate program that offers a 30% commission on all payments made by people you refer. That means if someone signs up for ConvertKit through your referral link, you’ll earn 30% of their subscription fee every single month until they cancel.

I use Flodesk but, as you can see, ConvertKit outperforms Flodesk (if only by a narrow margin) in a number of categories.
Flodesk is ideal if you own a small online business in a design or creative field. If you’re a photographer, brand designer, or other visual creative, your audience may expect beautifully designed emails and Flodesk delivers.
ConvertKit is great for hardcore marketers. If you have multiple sales funnels, complex automations, and an audience that cares more about content than style, ConvertKit might be an ideal fit for your business.
Ultimately, the best tool is the one you use, so pick the one that fits you best and run with it!
